1. What is your maximum actual print height, in millimeters? Measure the tallest thing you print today — character height for a date code, plus any barcode or logo. If the answer is 6–10 mm (typical for production date, lot number, expiry on food, seasoning, and personal-care packs), a 12.7 mm cartridge covers it with room to spare. If you are coding outer cartons with a logistics barcode, a brand logo, and several lines of address text, total height often clears 15 mm and can exceed 20 mm — that is full-inch territory.

2. Will you add content in the next one to two years? A customer may later ask for an anti-counterfeit QR code or a brand logo. That is a real requirement, but it is also a future requirement. Do not buy the width for a “maybe.” Note it, and use the stacking approach below instead.

3. What are your line speed and resolution needs? Width is only one dimension. A one-inch head ejects more ink per second; at high line speeds (200+ m/min) chasing 600 dpi for a scannable security code, you may need the larger head and a slight speed reduction to protect quality. If you only print a simple lot number, a half-inch head at 300 dpi keeps pace easily.

A one-inch cartridge prints taller content, but it also expels more ink per unit of time because more nozzles are active. Run 10,000 date codes and the full-inch head can burn through noticeably more ink than the half-inch one — and if your content never needed that height, every extra millilitre is money thrown away. Resolution ties back into speed. Chasing high-definition video-grade readability at 600 dpi usually means slowing the line to give the head time to place drops accurately. A fruit-can line running flat-out and printing only a lot number is perfectly served by a 12.7 mm head at 300 dpi — clear enough to scan, fast enough to keep up. An electronics pack needing a highly scannable security QR code typically wants the higher dpi paired with a 25.4 mm head and a small speed concession to protect print quality.
