Purchasing walks into the meeting with two quotes. One is thermal inkjet cartridges. The other is CIJ ink plus makeup fluid. Most small factories are not bad at saving money. They are afraid of buying the wrong consumable and dragging the whole line down with it.

The first mistake is pricing the two as one SKU. They do not even do the same job mechanically.
Think of a single-serve coffee pod against a full espresso machine. The TIJ cartridge is the pod: ink sealed inside, nozzles built into the face, and when it is done you throw the whole thing away — including the head. CIJ is the espresso machine: fluid runs through a pump, hoses and a return gutter, some of it evaporates, and you keep topping up water and cleaning the group head. A cheap bag of coffee beans looks economical next to a pod, but you are ignoring the machine attached to it.
On the line, industrial thermal inkjet fires a resistor, grows a bubble, and pushes one drop at a time. The surface curves away, the head cannot sit tight, and the TIJ code comes out pale or half-missing. That is the moment circulating CIJ ink and a longer throw become the main course.
The test takes ten seconds. Measure the gap your head can actually hold in production — not the one in the demo video. If it stays between 1 and 5 mm across the whole part, TIJ is in the running. If the part bounces, bends, or the gap drifts, lean CIJ and stop arguing about cartridge price.

Shift pattern decides more than any brochure does. The two technologies behave differently at idle.
A TIJ box is a pay-per-ride model: you are billed when you print, and a weekend stop costs nothing — cap the box and walk away. CIJ is a subscription that keeps billing whether you ride or not: the loop stays pressurised, solvent evaporates, and makeup goes in even when nobody is coding. A machine that marks shippers for four hours a day spends the other twenty slowly evaporating money.
Ask how the line actually runs. Less than one full shift, frequent stops, format changes? The TIJ box makes less trouble and a new operator learns the swap in one pass. Two shifts with almost no pause, one message, high volume? The CIJ loop keeps pace better and the cost per character starts to win.
The hidden line item here is skill. A new hire masters a TIJ changeover immediately. CIJ asks someone to read a viscosity alarm, aim the gutter, and judge whether the nozzle needs a wash — and at night, without the senior technician, that delay grows. If your relief crew works alone, TIJ is kinder.

The third question is about what the customer actually reads. Fine strokes are thermal inkjet’s home ground; continuous jets favour small text at speed.
Materials do not ask for the same fluid, and both systems come in solvent formulas — drop the old line that TIJ only marks paper:
- Kraft, shippers, coated cartons: water-based TIJ is often enough; CIJ solvent can be wasted money.

Only after the physics narrows the field do you open the spreadsheet. The correct sum is scannable marks divided by total money — not price per box against price per litre, which is how the argument goes crooked every time.
CIJ ink is often cheaper per litre, and a TIJ cartridge looks dearer per box. Both impressions are true and both are incomplete. On TIJ the box is closed, waste is low, and you can drop resolution when the text is simple, so character yield is predictable — but the head leaves with every empty box. On CIJ the loop stretches litres across a fast line and the cost per character often beats TIJ, yet makeup is not optional: an open circuit loses solvent constantly, plus filters, pump care, gutter cleaning and the odd clog. Idle consumption: a CIJ that never fills a shift still receives makeup and filter changes, which is not saving — it is fixed cost spread over low output.

Sales likes a big sentence — “TIJ now replaces all CIJ.” It replaces a lot of flat packaging. It does not replace physics. Throw, curve and takt do not yield to a nicer box.
The sensible answer in many plants is both, split by line: CIJ on the primary pack that runs and spins, TIJ on the case, the flat cap, and the warehouse recoding. That is not indecision; it is grading risk the way you already grade resin.
The beverage plant that did exactly this. A bottler ran two lines, both on CIJ to “keep it simple”: one marked dates on fast, damp PET bottles, the other marked lot and flow codes on the shipper. The consumable order was one pair — ink plus makeup.
The trouble sat on the case line. Speed was low, the text wanted to be large and readable, and the CIJ spent a good share of its life evaporating in idle. Monday meant a gutter wash.
